An off-duty police officer having a cup of coffee arrested a woman after he saw her leave the café with a stolen handbag.

Emma Price, 35, of Chatham Road, Battersea, who has previous theft convictions, admitted the theft at Wimbledon Magistrates’ Court. She was jailed for five months last Friday.

On December 1, Price went into Starbucks in Wimbledon town centre, sat down and pretended to drink from an empty cup. She picked up a handbag hanging on the back of a customer’s chair, placed it in her bag and walked out, but was arrested outside by the police officer who had witnessed the theft.
