If you are ever the unfortunate victim of bag theft, whether it’s been snatched or stolen when you weren’t looking, this is what you should do.

1. Report it to the police. Only a small proportion of crimes are reported to the police so please let them know there’s a problem. More importantly you will need a crime number from them for any insurance claim. Either call 999 (if in the UK) if anyone has been injured or there is any immediate danger. Else call your local police station (details here) or contact them online.

The police will need several pieces of information, especially if you saw who did it. Information such as:

  • Time.
  • Place.
  • What did you see?
  • Where there any witnesses?
  • Did you see a suspect? If so, what did they look like? Age, sex, race, clothes, height, hair, features etc.
  • Did you see a vehicle? Do you remember any details such as make, model, colour, registration etc?
  •

    2. Cancel your credit and debit cards. You can normally do this whilst waiting for the police, it’s important to do it as quickly as possible. Try to remember which credit and debit cards you had in your bag. Did you have receipts in your bag? Even if you did not have a particular card with you, some retailers still print full credit/debit card details on receipts, especially the pink or yellow “carbon copy” receipts.

Ask other people who are with you if they have their cards with them, as if they use the same bank they will have the lost or stolen cards number printed on the back.

    3. Call your mobile phone provider. This can usually be done the next day depending on whether it was insured or not. If not, they will normally send you a new SIM card (in the UK at least) for a small fee. Sorting out a phone will be up to you.

    4. Call your insurance company. If you have personal belongings insurance or travel insurance (if abroad) then you may be able to make a claim. Some policies do not cover you if you are in a bar or a club (especially mobile phone specific insurance) so check your policies small print.
